If there’s one thing I look forward to every week, it’s Taco Tuesday.
Not just because tacos are delicious (though, let’s be honest, that’s a big part of it), but because it’s my favourite plastic free recipe—a small but mighty way to cut out unnecessary waste while whipping up something our household loves.
Store-bought tortillas are sold wrapped in soft plastic and are filled with preservatives.
Tacos are a simple, fast and fun to make—plus, you get to control exactly what goes into them. And trust me, once you’ve tried homemade tortillas, you’ll never go back to store bought.
My personal quick recipe below ... along with a more comprehensive how-to video. (Recommended viewing for best results!).
The Recipe: Quick Steps
- Mix 1½ cups of flour and ¼ tsp salt in a bowl.
- Drizzle 3 tablespoons of oil over the flour and mix.
- Slowly add up to 1 cup of warm water, mixing until a firm but pliable dough ball forms. Knead the dough for approx. 5 mins.
- Cover the dough and let it rest for at least ½ hour.
- Divide it into small balls, cover and rest again for 15 mins.
- Flatten each ball and roll it out into a small, round taco shell.
- Cook in a dry, hot pan, until bubbles form, flip and cook for a few minutes on the other side until lightly browned.
Pro Tip: Skip the plastic wrap—just use a tea towel to cover the dough while it rests!
The Fun Part: Filling Your Tacos
The beauty of Taco Tuesday is that everyone can get creative with their fillings. Here are some of my go-to ideas:
- Classic: Seasoned fish, beef or chicken, lettuce, tomato, cheese and salsa.
- Veggie Delight: Black beans, corn, avocado and a squeeze of lime.
- Left overs? How about a Breakfast Twist: Scrambled eggs, lettuce, cheese and salsa for a morning fiesta. The options are endless, and half the fun is letting everyone build their own perfect taco.
Why This Recipe is a Plastic Free Win
Making your own tortillas isn’t just about avoiding the plastic packaging—it’s also about reducing food waste and eating cleaner. No preservatives, no mystery ingredients, just fresh, homemade goodness.
Plus, it’s a great way to get the whole family involved in the kitchen. Kids love rolling out the dough and kids and adults alike love picking their fillings, knowing exactly what’s on their plate
So, if you’re looking for a fun, easy and plastic free recipe to add to your weekly rotation, give Taco Tuesday a try. Your taste buds—and the planet, will thank you.
Happy cooking!
